Matt Margolis Interview

Q: Do you do design professionally, or as a hobby, or both?

A: Both, actually. I do various types of design. I work full-time as an architectural designer, but I also do logo design as a hobby -- which I hope to turn into a freelance profession.

Q: BigYellowCreative.com was just launched - what is the mission of this site?

A: For a number of months I have been designing logos, and I decided I ought to start putting my designs up online and offer my services to people who could use them.

Q: How did you come up with the name "Big Yellow Creative Group"?

A: This is an interesting story. It is a reference from my favorite novel by my favorite contemporary author, Nick Hornby. In his novel, "A Long Way Down" (published in 2005) one of the main characters was in a band called Big Yellow. I loved how the character described what it was like being in the band and his love of playing music. So I decided to name my logo design project after the band in the novel.

Q: HumanEyes technologies does some cool stuff with 3D, is there potential for the political world to get into 3D? I think it would be great if a Republican campaign did something creative that was a refreshing change.

A: Whatever it takes. Obama proved you can sell any product, no matter how bad it is, with a good marketing campaign. All graphics, from icons to logos to full color photographs are important pieces of a marketing campaign. 3D imagery may be the next big thing in political marketing.

Q: It's been said before that Obama's gotham font is very Americana, and the width between the letters invokes a very "important" feeling. What do you think of Obama's font? (similar to Deval Patrick's? Also color scheme?)

A: The font that Obama used, Gotham, is undeniably a very nice font with a simple dignity. It is different from the font Deval Patrick used -- which is actually identical to a font used on road signs -- I didn't like it as much. Choosing a font isn't as easy as it sounds. McCain used Optima, which comes free with Macs. Gotham is an expensive font. Fonts make a difference.

Q: What websites do you use for graphical assistance, tips, and inspiration?

A: There aren't any particular sites that I go to... But if I come across a logo or graphic I like I'll save it for reference. It is a good idea, as a designer, to recognize high quality work that isn't yours and understand what about it makes it good.

Q: What was it like growing up in Beverly, Massachusetts, ever visit Kitty O'Shea's pub?

A: Some things are best left forgotten, but I have had a few drinks at Kitty's. Though it wasn't my favorite place. I liked Garden City Pub. which was conveniently near Starbucks.

Q: You and your brother (Aaron) started HubPolitics.com (Massachusetts) and the name is understandable since Boston is referred to as the "hub of the universe." Where did the name of your new blog, "The Buffalo Bean" come from?

A: A lot of people here in Western New York ask me that. The "Bean" part of the name is a reference to Beantown, where my roots are obviously from. My hope is to recreate the success of Hub Politics with The Buffalo Bean.

Q: What is "post-modern" as a style in the world of graphic design?

A: Beats me.

Q: Conservatism has a perception of being old despite the fact that's a very new political movement compared to liberalism. How can graphics be used in the conservative movement to give us a different (the reality) image?

A: Graphics and imagery are a huge part of communicating one's message. Obama successfully used imagery to present himself as a God-like figure. That may have been a symptom of his narcissism, but it worked. Conservatives need to understand that there is a visual element to communicating a candidate's message.

Q: Do you have a favorite Republican candidate site for graphic design?

A: I don't think I have a favorite. Some are good, and some are quite embarrassing. Of course, I would really like to see GOP.com go through a redesign.

Q: What advice do you have for conservatives that want to jump into the world of graphic design? (sites, programs, trainings)

A: Conservatives who want to help the movement have to recognize where their skills and talents are first. Graphic design can be fun and creative, but it is also hardwork. You to have really enjoy it.

Q: Your Buffalo Bean font is a lot like the font from the movie "There Will Be Blood." Who would win in a fight, Billy The Butcher or Daniel Plainview?

A: I have neven seen the movie, but I'd put my money on the Republican.

(KeepThatFaith - that's a tough one, Plainview is a libertarian and Billy The Butcher is a paleo-con...but our money is on Billy The Butcher)

Thanks Matt for doing the interview and for all that you do to advance our cause. The newest project for KeepThatFaith is to help Dinesh D'Souza - watch the video here. Richard Dawkins is on the run and we want him to accept D'Souza's challnge for a debate.
